The IRON List - October 15, 2018

New to the IRON Lists series is “4 Simple Truths” - a quick synopsis of takeaways on the topics of industry, research, opportunities (for professional growth) and networking. Now you can follow these updates on Twitter: @KarfiConsulting

Industry: we may never escape assumptions about women vs. men.

Whether it’s positive or detrimental, it seems experts will always use beliefs about the differences between men & women to explain the need for (or lack of) gender equity in the workforce. An analysis from Tonye Cole, CEO of Nigeria’s Sahara Group, is just one example: “women are more balanced and weigh their different options before making a decision...unlike men, women were not driven by profit or making money.”

Research: global warming is going to hurt Africa - SEVERELY.

Notwithstanding the obvious implications on water supply, food scarcity, and now creation of historic weather patterns, researchers predict climate change will cause more civil wars on the continent. Read more about this in a paper published by Marshall B. Burke et al.

Opportunities: Face2Face Africa wants to hear from you.

Networking: can be a tool for social justice.

Duke University’s Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship (CASE) hosted a talk about how equal access to strong social networks leads to equity in opportunity. Social entrepreneurs should think about how they can bring marginalized groups in contact with people who can provide mentorship and skills training, which can lead to socioeconomic advancement.
